Top 10 reasons to get kids into Beekeeping.
In not sure about you but sharing my beekeeping journey with my kids was defiantly a highlight. There are so many reasons these are just a few examples for why beekeeping is so good for children.
-
Environmental Education: Beekeeping exposes children to the vital role bees play in our ecosystem. It helps them understand the importance of pollination and the interdependence of various species in maintaining a balanced environment.
-
STEM Learning: Beekeeping involves elements of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Children can learn about biology, entomology, botany, and even engineering as they explore hive structures, study bee behaviour, and analyse honey production.
-
Responsibility and Discipline: Taking care of bees requires commitment and responsibility. Children learn to be accountable for the well-being of the hive, ensuring they provide proper nutrition, monitoring the health of the colony, and maintaining the hive's cleanliness.
-
Respect for Nature: Beekeeping fosters a deep respect and appreciation for nature and its processes. Children develop empathy for bees and understand the significance of protecting and preserving the environment.
-
Hands-on Learning: Beekeeping is a practical, hands-on activity that encourages children to engage with nature. They learn by doing, actively participating in hive inspections, honey harvesting, and other tasks, gaining valuable experiential knowledge.
-
Entrepreneurial Skills: Beekeeping offers opportunities for children to develop entrepreneurial skills. They can sell honey, beeswax products, or even start small businesses related to beekeeping, fostering creativity, and an entrepreneurial mindset.
-
Connection with Food: Beekeeping connects children to the food they eat. They learn about the process of pollination and understand how bees contribute to the growth of fruits, vegetables, and other crops. This knowledge encourages healthy eating habits and an appreciation for locally sourced food.
-
Environmental Stewardship: By engaging in beekeeping, children become environmental stewards. They actively contribute to the conservation of pollinators and learn sustainable practices that protect bees and other beneficial insects.
-
Building Confidence: Beekeeping promotes self-confidence in children as they develop skills, gain knowledge, and overcome challenges. The sense of accomplishment they feel when successfully managing a hive and producing honey boosts their self-esteem.
-
Connection to a Community: Beekeeping often creates a sense of community. Children can join local beekeeping associations, attend workshops, and interact with experienced beekeepers. This provides an opportunity to make new friends, learn from others, and engage in a shared passion for beekeeping.
Note: While beekeeping can be a rewarding activity for children, it is important to ensure their safety and provide proper supervision. Schools like Trinity Anglican Collage in Thurgoona just outside of Albury NSW have started a Elective Beekeeping course. After the first year there has been wonderful feedback from kids and parents.
We offer a great range of cotton and three layer mesh kids beekeeping suits. The three layer mesh are defiantly the most popular as the cotton does get pretty warm on a hot day. Letting the breeze through and keeping the kids comfortable keeps them in a better mood... (always a good plan if you want them to keep going with beekeeping)
